Medical transcriptionists review and edit drafts prepared by speech recognition software. They proofread for grammatical, typographical, and punctuation errors.
Identify and correct errors
Medical transcriptionists identify inconsistencies, errors, and missing information in reports. They update medical records and fill in missing information.
Submit reports
Medical transcriptionists submit reports to physicians and other healthcare providers for review and approval. They enter medical reports into electronic health records (EHR) systems
- Requirements
- Post-secondary training in medical transcription.
Certification as a healthcare documentation specialist would be advantageous.
2-3 years of experience as a medical transcriptionist, or similar.
Proficiency in Electronic Health Record systems, such as AdvancedMD and Kareo Clinical EHR.
Ability to transcribe accurately and maintain a minimum typing speed of 65 words per minute.
Experience with specialized transcription equipment and voice recognition software, including WebChartMD and PhraseExpander.
In-depth knowledge of medical terminology and jargon, as well as editing practice.
